There always seems to be something new on the farm. Whether it is a new plant that blooms out of nowhere, or a bird we haven’t seen before, or a new cat that has made his (or her) home in the barn, I am endlessly surprised. Last year we brought some new additions to the farm- the sheep and the geese. I am thoroughly enjoying Coco & Chanel with their thick wool that I love digging my fingers into while they are eating their grain in the morning. They call to me when I am outdoors, and come running if they think I am on my way to see them. Funny girls that they are~
This week the girls had their first appointment with their beautician- Leo – who sheared them clean. What an experience! He taught me to flip them over onto their backs so that I could do their hooves on my own. He then sheared them down to their naked selves and saved all of the beautiful thick fleece for me! It is gorgeous underneath- Coco’s is so dark after being used to her “highlights”- the lighter ends having been exposed to sunshine and rather ugly weather conditions. Chanel had a clean lovely cream colored fleece under her fairly dirty outer layer. I collected all of the fleece and stored it in a place that will get good circulation until I can wash it all properly.
I will say that the girls were none too impressed with me during or after this process. They felt rather violated I think, being as it is their first time having their thick warm wool removed. That being said, they are far perkier today with all of that itchy weight gone and they seem to bounce around the pasture much more.
I did take a bit in with me last night. My one goal with the fleece from the girls was to make a little felted “Coco & Chanel” to keep as a memento of their first shearing. I completed a white one last night and plan to work on them on those days when I am stuck indoors due to inclement weather- of which we have had far too much of lately.
Next year I am adding bees- for certain! By then all of this learning when it comes to the sheep will be old hat! Have a fabulous Thursday mon amies~
xx

I am in love with the 2 of them. And in love with your lifestyle hunnie….They must feel good without all that weight and itch for the summer! I know I would!

Love this! Wow I Had no idea what the hair would look like underneath – totally different! So do you shave them every year (summer) so they stay cool and so they regrow? It is funny how Channel was hiding in your photos after being shaved
What a great job Leo did! Not a nick anywhere. I’m glad to see the girls got over it quickly and you can see eye to eye again. What a charmed life you lead. Enjoy!
Adorable! They are just adorable. Funny the reaction Coco had. Can they possibly be ‘insecure’ with the new “do”?? Bees next year…you continue to amaze me.
Not only do I love your sheep, I adore that you’ve named them Coco & Chanel. We have all number of animals here at Red Damsel Farm, but it feels a bit lonely without sheep…
Oh these girls are just adorable!! I love reading your blog…..you are so inspiring!!

They are adorable. But what I really want is one of those itty bitty sheep you made from their wool. Precious.

I’d love sheep on our farm….we are seriously considering getting two Zwartbles ram lambs right now. What breed are yours? They look like they have loads of personality! Thanks for sharing =) xx
